Brass Nameplates: When to Choose Etched Brass for Industrial and Decorative Identification
Most brass enquiries arrive with the material already specified, but no explanation of why it was chosen. Sometimes brass is exactly right. In other cases, it appears on the drawing because the last one said brass, even though the new one is heading for a chemical wash-down area where it could look worn within twelve months.
Brass is the one identification material where appearance is part of the specification rather than a by-product of it. It is also the one material where a customer occasionally wants the surface to change over time. That makes the specification conversation different from the one you would have about anodised aluminium or stainless steel, and it is worth having properly before the order goes in.
What etched brass involves
Sheet brass for identification work is typically a 60/40 or 63/37 copper-zinc alloy, most commonly CZ108, supplied between 0.5mm and 3mm depending on whether the plate is fixed flat to a machine, mounted on standoffs, or expected to carry its own weight on a wall.
Chemical etching removes brass to a controlled depth, usually in the region of 0.05mm to 0.15mm, leaving text, logos, serial data and borders recessed below the surface. The recess is then filled with a pigmented stoving enamel or two-pack epoxy and the surface is polished back so pigment remains only in the etched detail. That is what paint filled brass nameplates are: the legend sits inside the metal rather than on top of it, so abrasion and cleaning take the finish before they take the information.
Black is the default fill for legibility on a polished ground. Coloured fills work, but contrast against a yellow metal is weaker than it is against stainless, so fine text in mid-tones reads poorly at distance. Worth checking on a proof rather than a screen.
Where brass is the right choice
Brass suits applications that call for a distinctive appearance without sacrificing detail or durability.
A sense of permanence. A polished brass plate on a control cabinet, a pump skid or a boardroom wall has a visual weight printed materials cannot match. That makes it a natural choice for premium equipment, heritage estates, distilleries, listed buildings and commemorative work.
Fine detail. Chemical etching reproduces serif type, crests, coats of arms and intricate linework more cleanly than many engraving processes. This capability explains why architectural and commemorative plaques still rely on etched brass.
Long-lasting durability. Etching places the legend below the surface, protecting it from routine handling and cleaning. A brass plate wiped regularly for decades can remain readable long after a surface-printed alternative has worn away.
Specialist material properties. Copper alloys are non-sparking, which matters in some ATEX-adjacent applications, and copper surfaces are actively hostile to bacteria, which is part of why brass persists in healthcare and hospitality touchpoints.
The finish decision matters more than most people might think
Bare brass naturally oxidises. Over time, its bright yellow deepens to warm brown and eventually to a dark, mottled patina. The application determines whether that change adds character or makes the plate look neglected, so the finish needs to be agreed before production begins.
- Polished and lacquered holds the bright finish. The lacquer is the wear part, and in high-traffic or outdoor positions it will need attention in years rather than decades.
- Satin or brushed brass disguises fingerprints and handling marks more effectively than a polished surface. It also tends to age more evenly.
- Antique or chemically patinated takes the plate straight to a darkened finish, which suits heritage settings and removes the awkward middle period where a plate looks neither new nor old.
- Unlacquered polished brass works best where regular cleaning already forms part of the maintenance routine. Breweries, hotel entrances and restored machinery often suit this approach because ongoing polishing supports the intended appearance.
Decide this at the drawing stage. Retrofitting a finish decision after manufacture means starting again.
When you should not choose brass

Marine and chloride-heavy environments. Salt spray and standing chlorides attack the zinc phase in brass. This process, known as dezincification, leaves a weakened, pinkish, porous surface. For offshore, coastal or heavy wash-down duty, 316 stainless steel will usually provide better resistance.
Areas ammonia is present. Brass under tensile stress plus ammonia or ammonium compounds gives stress corrosion cracking, historically called season cracking. This catches people out through cleaning regimes rather than process chemistry: a lot of general-purpose glass and surface cleaners are ammonia based. Check the cleaning regime before specifying brass, or make the approved products clear to the facilities team.
Weight and cost-sensitive volume work. Brass has roughly three times the density of aluminium and considerably more expensive per square metre. For high-volume asset tags, rating plates and outdoor equipment identification, anodised aluminium often provides better value without compromising practical durability.
Other materials also suit certain applications more closely. Traffolyte remains useful for replaceable panel legends, while stainless steel is often the stronger options for VIN plates, chassis identification and regulated data. Brass works best when the plate’s appearance carries as much importance as the information it displays.
What to send your supplier
A brass drawing that gets quoted accurately first time usually includes:
- Alloy and thickness, or the application detail needed for someone to advise on both
- Overall dimensions, corner radii, and hole positions with tolerances
- Fixing method: adhesive, screws, standoffs, or countersunk
- Finish: polished, satin, antique, lacquered or unlacquered
- Fill colour, ideally to a BS or RAL reference
- Font and artwork as vector files, with minimum text height flagged
- The environment: indoor, outdoor, temperature range, chemical or cleaning exposure
- Quantity and whether serialisation or variable data applies
If half of that is still open, say so. It is a shorter conversation than a rejected first-off.
